OMUTHIYA, 21 MAR (NAMPA) – Former President Nangolo Mbumba and former Prime Minister Nahas Angula are expected to headline Independence Day celebrations at Omboto village in the Omuthiya Constituency on Saturday.
The event is one of 11 planned for the Oshikoto Region on Saturday as festivities are rotating across all constituencies to ensure broader public participation.
Other high-profile speakers have been dispatched throughout the region, including Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi, who will serve as the keynote speaker for the Olukonda constituency event. Other designated speakers include Deputy Minister of Education Dino Ballotti at Nehale Lya Mpinga, Labour Minister Wise Immanuel at Omuntele, and former Finance Minister Iipumbu Shimi at Onayena. Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi will address the Tsumeb Constituency, while National Council Chairperson Lukas Muha is slated for Guinas and Minister of Mines Modestus Amutse for the Eengodi Constituency event.
Local resident Helvi Shinyengu expressed the community’s excitement to Nampa, noting that the initiative brings national leaders directly to the people.
“We are thrilled, these celebrations have never come here before. The government is bringing national leaders closer and our children will see them,” she said.
Amon Shongolo praised the government's decentralisation policy and Governor Sacky Kathindi's rotation initiative.
“Youth can now celebrate locally, meet leaders, and learn directly about Namibia's liberation struggle instead of hearing about events far away,” he noted.
Omuthiya Councillor Erastus Nekomba highlighted the community's strong commitment to honouring independence, emphasising that hosting the event in the respective constituencies increases direct participation, strengthens national unity, and showcases regional cultural diversity.
“Hosting in places like Omboto village brings the celebration to the people, deepens democracy, and ensures our independence heroes' legacy is shared by all,” Nekomba said.
For the first time in Namibian history, independence celebrations are being held in all 14 regions to ensure broader inclusivity and participation for all citizens.
