Oshana police tighten security ahead of Independence day celebrations

OSHAKATI, 20 MAR (NAMPA) - Oshana Police Regional Commander, Commissioner Naftal Sakaria, says security has been intensified ahead of Namibia’s Independence Day celebrations, with comprehensive measures in place to ensure public safety at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
Sakaria told Nampa on Friday that law enforcement officers have already been deployed across the region as part of a coordinated operation to maintain order during Saturday's event, which he described as a major public gathering.
“We regard it, from a policing perspective, as a major event. We are ready and have prepared extensively. The operation has already commenced, and our members are deployed on the ground,” he said.
He cautioned attendees against bringing prohibited items, particularly weapons and sharp objects, to the stadium, emphasising that security personnel will be responsible for maintaining safety at the venue.
“The security is in place. Those attending do not need to bring weapons; their safety is our responsibility. They should leave security matters to us. No sharp objects will be permitted. We appeal to the public to arrive early as there will be thorough checks to ensure that everyone entering the stadium is cleared,” Sakaria said.
He further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and safeguard their personal belongings, noting that negligence often creates opportunities for criminal activity.
“It is the responsibility of individuals to ensure the safety of their property. Leaving valuables such as laptops, phones or handbags unattended in vehicles attracts unnecessary attention from would-be criminals,” he added.
Sakaria also issued a stern warning to potential offenders, stressing that law enforcement will act decisively against any criminal behaviour during the celebrations.
“Those intent on committing crimes should be aware that they will face the full force of the law. Our officers are on the ground and ready to act,” he said.
