MARIENTAL, 21 MAR (NAMPA) – Namibia has achieved significant developmental milestones since gaining independence in 1990, driven by sustained peace, governance reforms, and the expansion of social programmes, former People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) fighter Theresia Basson has said.
Basson, who is the coordinator of the Namibia National Liberation Veterans Association (NNLVA) in the Hardap Region, credited Founding President Sam Nujoma for championing national reconciliation, which laid the foundation for peace, unity and stability.
Speaking to Nampa ahead of Namibia’s 36th independence celebrations, she noted that the country has consistently conducted peaceful and democratic elections, allowing for the smooth transfer of political power, while strengthening democratic principles.
Basson further pointed to the establishment of a three-tier government system comprising national, regional and local authorities as a cornerstone of good governance, supported by national development frameworks such as Vision 2030.
“The current administration under President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah continues to promote a merit-based governance approach aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing capacity and advancing economic diversification to position Namibia competitively on the global stage,” she stated
Basson further highlighted improvements in social protection, including expanded safety nets such as pension grants for senior citizens and support for persons with disabilities, which have contributed to improved livelihoods at the grassroots level.
In addition, land allocation through traditional authorities has increased access to land ownership in communal areas, while ongoing investments in education infrastructure and curriculum development have enhanced access and equity in the sector.
Basson called on the youth to value and safeguard the country’s independence, while embracing self-reliance, entrepreneurship and a culture of saving and investment.
“Young people must take pride in their country, respect their communities and prioritise education as a key driver of socio-economic advancement,” she said.
Looking ahead, Basson expressed hope for a Namibia anchored on equity, equality and empowerment, with strengthened governance systems, improved service delivery and the eradication of corruption and tribalism.
She went on to call for increased empowerment of youth, women and marginalised groups, alongside continued reforms in the education and health sectors to ensure inclusive and sustainable national development.
