WINDHOEK, 21 MAR (NAMPA) – The atmosphere at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek was vibrant Saturday morning as large crowds started gathering for the Independence Day celebrations.
Attendees started streaming into the venue early, dressed in bright outfits, with many showcasing traditional attire that reflects Namibia’s diverse cultural heritage. Flags waved across the grounds and music set the tone for the day’s programme.
A noticeable feature of this year’s turnout is the strong presence of the youth, many of whom say the celebrations are an important opportunity to connect with the country’s history and identity.
Fifteen-year-old Nguundja Ndero said Independence Day serves as a reminder of Namibia’s roots.
“The importance of independence is to celebrate our heritage, know our cultural past and know the people around us,” she said.
Others described the event as a moment of unity and enjoyment.
Seventeen-year-old Faith Iiyambo said she is attending to experience the spirit of togetherness.
“The reason for me attending this event is to basically just enjoy and come together as one nation,” she said.
The keynote address will be delivered by Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi.
In a departure from previous years, the government announced that official Independence Day events are being held in all 14 regions simultaneously this year to ensure broader inclusivity and participation for all citizens.
