OSHAKATI, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Members of the public in the Oshana Region were streaming into the Independence Stadium in Oshakati on Saturday as the region prepared to host Namibia’s 36th independence anniversary celebrations, marked by a blend of official ceremony and cultural performances.
Oshana joins the other 13 regions in commemorating Namibia’s independence, attained on 21 March 1990 after a protracted 27-year liberation struggle against South African colonial rule.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah directed that this year’s anniversary be decentralised, with all 14 regions hosting their own celebrations under the leadership of regional governors. The day is being held under the theme ‘Beyond 35: For a Prosperous Future.’
In Oshakati, proceedings are scheduled to begin at 10h00, following the arrival of members of the public, cultural groups and entertainment from as early as 08h00, setting a festive tone at the stadium.
Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge is expected to lead regional leadership, including the regional and local authority councillors as well as traditional leaders, in welcoming Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, who is guest of honour and keynote speaker.
Security apparatus is represented, with Oshana Police Regional Commander, Commissioner Sakaria Lungameni, among the senior officials in attendance.
The highlight of the event will be the parade by the Namibian Defence Force, with Governor Hofni Iipinge expected to mount the dais and inspect the parade.
A variety of cultural performances by groups such as Nashikoya, Eluwa and the Oshana Youth Choir will provide entertainment throughout the half-day programme.
Solidarity messages from the youth, veterans and traditional authorities are also expected to underscore the spirit of unity and nationhood.
The prime minister’s keynote address is anticipated to reflect on Namibia’s journey since independence and to outline the country’s future trajectory.
