An overview shows Hungarian (R) and Russian (L) national flags on a wall, workers and vehicles at the Paks II site near the city of Paks, southern Hungary, on February 5, 2026, as concreting begins on the foundation plate of the first technological building on the nuclear island of Unit 5, officially marking the start of the physical construction of Paks II. Workers poured concrete for a new reactor near Hungary's sole nuclear plant beginning a contentious expansion project led by Russia's Rosatom following a decade of delays. Hungary struck an agreement with Russia in 2014 involving a 10 billion euro ($11 billion) loan deal to build two reactors at the Paks plant south of Budapest. (Photo by Attila KISBENEDEK / AFP)
The Israeli built controversial separation barrier is seen passing through fields near the Palestinian village of Beit Aawa, west the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Hebron on February 5, 2026. The barrier is a combination of concrete walls and wire fences running north to south that Israel says is necessary to protect it self from Palestinian militants. However, large sections of it encroach on the West Bank, and the Palestinians call it a land grab. The International Court of Justice issued a non-binding ruling in 2004 that parts of the barrier in the West Bank are illegal and should be removed. The barrier is supposed to follow the Green Line that marks Israel's borders before the 1967 Six Day War, when the Jewish state captured the Golan Heights, east Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. A Palestinian woman stands in the yard of her home as shops and homes belonging to Palestinian families are destroyed by bulldozers protected by Israeli security forces in Beit Aawa, west the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Hebron on February 5, 2026. Israel, whose army has occupied the West Bank since 1967, regularly demolishes the homes of Palestinians accused of carrying out deadly attacks against Israelis and of not having construction permits issued by Israel. The government defends the deterrent effect of these demolitions, but critics denounce the practice as a form of collective punishment that leaves families homeless. (Photo by HAZEM BADER / AFP)
