WINDHOEK, 26 JUN (NAMPA) – South Africa's High Commissioner to Namibia, Thenjiwe Ethel Mtintso, bid farewell to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Thursday, following the end of her term.
Presidential Spokesperson, Alfredo Hengari said that during a closed-door meeting, President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the support he showed Namibia following the passing of President Hage Geingob and Founding President, Sam Nujoma.
“The president also spoke about the energy partnership between Namibia and South Africa. Namibia is in the process of developing the Kudu gas fields, and the president believes that South Africa can be a very important partner in terms of that form of energy for South Africa's domestic consumption. She also spoke about cooperation in the field of agriculture - livestock as well as horticulture,” Hengari said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to working closely with South Africa, and they also discussed plans to host another Binational Commission. The last meeting was hosted by Namibia in 2023.
“This is something the two countries are working on actualising very soon, because as you know, South Africa is our largest bilateral trading partner,” Hengari said.
Namibia, he added, is a big investor in the South African economy through its pension funds and asset managers, among others, hence the importance of the binational commission to take place to give effect to the decisions taken at the last binational commission.
Over 150 decisions were taken at the last binational commission, Hengari said.
