Alleged Hoachanas serial rapist pleads not guilty

WINDHOEK, 17 JUN (NAMPA) - A man accused of raping four women and a four-month old baby girl between 2012 and 2016 pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial in the Windhoek High Court on Tuesday.
Jonas Morao, who faces a total nine charges including housebreaking, pleaded not guilty to all the charges as read out to him by Deputy Prosecutor General, State Advocate Dominic Lisulo.
It is alleged that Morao’s troubles with the law started between 19 and 22 November 2008 when he allegedly broke into a shop at Hoachanas and stole alcohol, cigarettes and cash. In that matter, he faces three charges of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.
In February 2012, Morao allegedly broke into the home of a woman at Hoachanas with the intention to rape her. Further allegations are that he broke into the house to commit an offense unknown to the state.
It is further alleged that the suspect, on 14 May 2016 broke into the home of another woman, his cousin, and raped her. He further faces an alternative charge of indecent assault, in that he indecently and lasciviously assaulted the victim by pulling down her underpants.
On 12 November 2016, the suspect allegedly raped another victim while she was asleep. On the same day, he allegedly abducted and raped a four-month-old baby and raped her, after breaking into her parents’ home.
Morao, who is being represented by Mariental-based Lawyer, Peru Liebenberg, is out on a warning.
The trial continues before Judge Claudia Claasen.
