1 (Brussels (dpa-AFX) - Hungary's economy expanded at a faster pace in the first quarter of 2026, as estimated initially, the latest data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office showed on Tuesday.

On an unadjusted basis, gross domestic product rose 1.7% annually in the March quarter, following a 0.8% expansion in the fourth quarter. That was in line with the flash data published on April 30.
Further, this was the strongest expansion since the second quarter of 2024.

The expenditure breakdown showed that final consumption expenditure of households grew 4.9%, and government consumption was 5.4% higher.

Meanwhile, gross fixed capital formation dropped 0.1% amid contraction in investments in construction. Net foreign demand was not favourable as exports fell 1.8% amid a 4.1% growth in imports.

On an adjusted basis, GDP also advanced 1.7% yearly in the first quarter versus 0.7% growth in the previous quarter, as estimated.

2 (Frankfurt (dpa) - More than half of German adults are overweight, according to official figures released on Tuesday, with men particularly affected.

Some 53% of adults aged 18 or older surveyed in 2025 had a body mass index (BMI) of over 25, the Federal Statistical Office said.

The World Health Organization considers adults to be overweight if they have a BMI greater than or equal to 25.

A total of 17.9% of those surveyed were classified as obese, meaning they had a BMI equal to or greater than 30.

Men are more likely to be overweight than women, according to the figures.

A total of 62.6% of men had a BMI above 25, compared to 43.8% of women. Some 20% of men were found to be obese, compared to 15.8% of women.

3 (A severe tropical storm battered southwestern Japan on Tuesday, injuring 15 people and prompting calls to evacuate for hundreds of thousands of people due to flooding and landslide risks.
Storm Jangmi -- which was downgraded from a typhoon -- also knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and grounded hundreds of flights.

But the storm was heading northeast toward Tokyo, where authorities warned of possible transport disruptions and school closures for Wednesday.

Jangmi led to evacuation advisories for more than 800,000 people in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures on the southern main island of Kyushu, the Japanese government said.

Torrential rain and strong winds that felled a 10-metre (32-foot) tree in Okinawa were seen in images reported by local media.

4 (The main airport in Ituri, the DR Congo province at the epicentre of an Ebola outbreak, reopened on Tuesday after a 10-day closure for safety reasons, the government said.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is battling a major epidemic of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever that is suspected to have killed at least 246 people in the country and neighbouring Uganda, according to the African Union's health agency, Africa CDC.

On May 23, the authorities suspended all commercial flights to and from the airport in Bunia, the capital of Ituri in the conflict-plagued eastern DRC, allowing only medical and humanitarian planes in.

Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said the authorities needed to put health measures in place to protect travellers.

On Tuesday, the transport ministry said the authorities had assessed how the outbreak was being monitored and concluded "conditions are now in place for a gradual and safe resumption of flights".

5 (Eurozone inflation rose in May as the Middle East war sent energy costs soaring, official data showed Tuesday, reinforcing the likelihood of an interest rate increase in the single currency area.

Consumer price rises accelerated to 3.2 percent last month, the EU's statistics agency Eurostat said, up from 3.0 percent in April.

The reading was in line with forecasts from analysts polled by Bloomberg but lower than the 3.3 percent predicted by economists for FactSet.

Inflation in the single currency area is sharply higher than the European Central Bank's two percent target, following a third consecutive rise.

Of particular importance for the ECB ahead of its next meeting on June 11 is core inflation, which strips out volatile energy and food prices.
