1 (KATIMA MULILO, 30 APR (NAMPA) - Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Lucia Iipumbu, said the Zambezi Region remains strategic and unique, but continues to face threats from illicit cross-border crimes.

Addressing a regional ministerial staff meeting at Katima Mulilo on Friday, Iipumbu called for vigilance among staff members who facilitate lawful movement, support legitimate trade, promote tourism and serve communities with dignity and professionalism.

The minister is on a two-day working visit to the region, during which she is expected to inspect ongoing ministerial projects, conduct border visits and participate in possible police operations, among other activities.

“You are expected to protect the borders of the Republic, uphold the law, detect irregularities, prevent crime and maintain internal security. This is not an easy responsibility, but it is a noble one.

“You are not merely operating offices, border posts, police stations, correctional facilities and service points. You are helping to secure the Republic. You are helping to protect communities. You are helping to give identity and dignity to citizens. You are helping to make the State visible where it matters most,” she said.

2 (The United Nations' health chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus landed on Saturday in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo province worst-hit by a severe Ebola outbreak, an AFP journalist reported.

The World Health Organization's director general had earlier announced he was coming to Bunia, capital of Ituri province, to "help" and "listen to" the people facing the worst of the outbreak.

The highly contagious haemorrhagic fever is already present in three eastern DRC provinces and in neighbouring Uganda, where nine confirmed infections, including one death, have been recorded.
There have been at least 1,077 suspected cases of Ebola in the DRC since the outbreak was declared on May 15, including 246 deaths, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

"The international community is involved under the leadership of the government of DRC -- and at the same time community ownership is important," Tedros told reporters.

3 (Voters in Malta cast their ballots on Saturday in a general election likely to secure a record-setting fourth term for the Labour government, despite concerns about over-construction and corruption in the tiny Mediterranean nation.

Opinion polls point to a win for Prime Minister Robert Abela, 48, who is campaigning on Labour's economic record and a promise to shield import-heavy Malta from geopolitical crises.

His main rival is Nationalist Party (PN) candidate Alex Borg, a 30-year-old lawyer and former "Mr World Malta" beauty pageant winner, who would be the country's youngest leader.

At festive final rallies on Thursday, Abela told flare-waving supporters that he would be "a captain as strong as steel", while Borg slammed a country "in chaos", from a beleaguered health service to blackouts in sweltering summers.

Located off the coast of Sicily, Malta is the smallest and most densely populated country in the European Union, with around 550,000 people living in 316 square kilometres (122 square miles).

4 (MOSCOW, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced on Saturday that he will lift tariffs on Colombian goods, effective June 1, following talks with Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella.

"After speaking with him and confirming his readiness to wage a real and joint fight against narcoterrorism, I have decided to eliminate the security tariff levied on Colombian goods, effective June 1," Noboa wrote on X.

Presidential elections in Colombia are scheduled for May 31.

Ecuador imposed 30% tariffs on all imports from Colombia on February 1 and gradually raised them to 100%, citing Colombia's reluctance to jointly combat cross-border drug trafficking. In early May, Ecuador reduced tariffs on Colombian imports to 75%.

In response, Colombia imposed mirror restrictions on Ecuadorian goods and suspended international electricity supply deals with the neighbor, which routinely suffers from energy shortages during the dry season.

5 (Frankfurt (dpa-AFX) -European markets closed mixed on Friday, struggling to find support past mid-afternoon. The mood remained cautious with investors assessing the prospects of a US-Iran peace deal after the two nations reportedly agreed in principle to extend the ceasefire by sixty days.

The agreement would purportedly facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and enable fresh negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, although President Donald Trump has yet to sign off on the deal.

Investors also digested a slew of regional economic data.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 closed up 0.14%. Germany's DAX ended 0.05% up, while the U.K.'s FTSE 100 and France's CAC 40 settled lower by 0.16% and 0.07%, respectively.

Among other markets in Europe, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Spain and Sweden ended higher.

Belgium, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia and Türkiye closed weak.
In the UK market, Endeavour Mining climbed 4.2%, AutoTrader Group moved up 3.4% and Airtel Africa gained nearly 2.5%, while Convatec Group, DCC, Rolls-Royce Holdings, Diploma and Natwest Group ended up by 1.5%-2%.
