Witbooi urges youth to protect cultural identity amid modernisation

OSHAKATI, 29 MAY (NAMPA) - Vice President Lucia Witbooi has urged the youth not to abandon their cultural identity as the country modernises, warning that heritage and tradition must remain central to national development.
Addressing the opening of the 12th Oshakati Totem Expo 2026 on Friday, Witbooi said young people should embrace education, innovation and technology without losing touch with their roots.
"Events where we celebrate diverse culture are very crucial. Let our young people never detach themselves from their identity and heritage. Let them learn their language, their culture and their history. Learn and understand your clan and your totems. Respect your traditions while embracing education, innovation, and technology. The future belongs to a generation that understands both where it comes from and where it is going," she said.
Witbooi said cultural identity should not be viewed as outdated in a modern society.
"Rather, it should serve as a foundation upon which we build modern and united communities," the vice president said.
She further called on towns without similar initiatives to follow Oshakati’s example by creating platforms that support entrepreneurs and attract economic activity.
“The town continues to expand in infrastructure, trade, investment, and population growth, making it a strategic hub not only for the northern regions but for Namibia as a whole. I therefore call upon all towns in Namibia, especially those without expos and trade fairs taking place in their towns, to emulate the examples of these towns that have come up with initiatives to boost local businesses for their people,” she said.
The Oshakati Totem Expo, now in its 12th edition, was held under the theme “Strengthening Ties Through Culture,” bringing together exhibitors, traditional authorities, businesses and community leaders from across the country.
