WINDHOEK, 29 MAY (NAMPA) – A new shopping and transport hub aimed at bringing retail services closer to Katutura residents officially opened to the public on Friday, with developers describing Goreangab Mall as a N.dollars 270 million investment expected to transform the area economically and socially.
“Goreangab Mall represents a N.dollars 270 million investment into the heart of one of Windhoek’s most vibrant districts,” developers Oryx Properties Limited and Safland Property Group said in a joint statement.
The 14 700-square-metre retail centre, situated in Goreangab, features more than 40 tenants, including Shoprite, Clicks, Ackermans, Jet, Markhams, OK Furniture and Cash Crusaders.
According to the developers, the project created approximately 340 construction jobs and 360 permanent positions.
Speaking during the opening, Safland Property Group Leasing Director, Charles Fourie, said the mall was developed to improve access to quality shopping experiences for residents who previously had to travel long distances into central Windhoek.
“We built this not only for Goreangab, but for Katutura, to show that there are good and nice things to be had in Katutura,” he said.
Fourie said the development is expected to stimulate further investment in the area, similar to what followed the establishment of The Grove Mall in Windhoek.
“In five years’ time, this place will be unrecognisable with what is going to happen here,” he added.
Community members who attended the opening welcomed the development, saying it would reduce transport costs and create employment opportunities.
A temporary cleaner employed at the mall, Hidipo Moses, said the opening brought hope to many residents struggling to find work.
“I feel so proud. I never knew in this kind of location there would be such a mall,” he said.
He added that residents would no longer need to travel far for shopping and services.
Another resident, Maria Huises, said the mall would help community members save on transport expenses.
“For me, it’s a good thing because transport is now very expensive. We are happy,” she said.
Retailers operating at the mall also expressed optimism about the response from shoppers on opening day.
Assistant Store Manager at Clicks Goreangab Mall, Themba Mosegedi, said residents now have easier access to products and services previously only available in town.
“You don’t need to take a cab or go to town anymore. Customers can now shop closer to home,” he said.
Bank Windhoek, which opened a digital branch at the mall, described the facility as part of efforts to bring banking services closer to communities.
The developers said the mall includes an integrated public transport hub designed to improve accessibility and commuter safety.
The Goreangab Mall forms part of the broader Goreangab Waterfront Development, which is expected to include 2 500 residential units in the future.
