KARIBIB, 25 MAR (NAMPA) – The Navachab Gold Mine has commenced early-stage construction of a N.dollars 120 million health centre in Karibib, aimed at improving access to healthcare services in the area.
Speaking during a recent site visit, the mine’s corporate communications officer, McLyn Kasale, said the Karibib Health Centre is currently at “phase zero”, involving preparatory works such as underground installations and the erection of a boundary fence.
“The Karibib Health Centre is a rural health facility which will consist of 15 beds, designed to complement existing services in the district,” Kasale said.
Visible construction is expected to begin in April once initial groundwork is completed. The project is structured into four phases, progressing from basic infrastructure to a fully equipped medical facility.
Phase one will replicate services currently offered at a small local clinic, with additional features such as a pharmacy. Phase two will introduce inpatient facilities, including beds, a kitchen, laundry services and a small theatre. The final phase will provide staff accommodation, a mortuary and recreational amenities for healthcare workers.
The project is expected to be completed over three years, with handover to the government planned for 2028.
Kasale said the decision to construct a health facility followed a reassessment of community needs after the COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in healthcare infrastructure in Karibib.
“Initially, we planned to build a school, but we realised the district does not have a hospital and residents often have to travel to Usakos or Swakopmund for medical care. A health facility would therefore have a greater impact,” he said.
The Karibib Town Council provided land for the project at no cost, while Navachab is the main funder, with additional partners being sought to support completion.
Kasale said the initiative forms part of the mine’s corporate social responsibility strategy, which prioritises long-term infrastructure.
“We believe in leaving behind tangible projects that will outlive the mine. Infrastructure such as this health centre will continue to benefit the community and the state,” he said.
Navachab is also constructing a N.dollars 10.2 million SME park in Usakos to support local entrepreneurs, and funding a science laboratory at Petrus !Ganeb Secondary School in Uis after a fire destroyed the previous facility.
