WINDHOEK, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Namibia marked its 36th Independence Day this year by transitioning from a national celebration to regional events.
The Khomas Region gathering in Windhoek featured the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi, as the keynote speaker, who called for unity and stressed that the country's ethnic diversity, traditions, and cultures should not divide the nation.
“Let's instead turn them into a glue that binds us together. In a world where instability and conflict threaten many nations, Namibia must remain a beacon of peace. Our greatest defence is not only our security forces, but also our unity as citizens,” stated Kapofi.
Addressing a packed Sam Nujoma Stadium, Kapofi emphasised that Namibia's national identity is rooted in historical events and principles established over centuries.
He acknowledged that despite the intense conflict during the struggle for independence, which resulted in significant loss of life, the unity and stability Namibia enjoys today are respected by other nations.
“This should never be taken for granted. Instead, we must safeguard it with the same dedication and vigour our forebears showed. Likewise, we have a healthy and vibrant multi-party democratic system respected by many nations. Let us continue to nurture it and respect ourselves despite our divergent political beliefs,” he remarked.
Kapofi added that Namibia’s political and ideological differences must never be allowed to become irreconcilable, as this could damage the country’s commendable political and social ecosystem.
He emphasised that although the government supports growth through the sixth National Development Plan (NDP 6) and the Youth Fund, real progress depends on the energy and initiative of the people.
“Prosperity is not built by passive expectation but through active participation. While our political freedom remains secure, economic emancipation is still a work in progress,” he said.
Kapofi emphasised the need to strengthen systems ensuring fairness and efficiency, such as tendering and affirmative action, to prevent misuse.
He noted that while the country has abundant resources and strong determination, challenges remain.
“Independence has removed the excuse of colonialism; now, the responsibility lies squarely on our shoulders. As President Nandi-Ndaitwah has reminded us, ‘We are too few to be poor.’ Each citizen must contribute, for prosperity is not solely the government’s task; it is the collective mission of all Namibians,” he remarked.
He further emphasised that the nation's future depends on the collective efforts of all citizens supporting the president and one another, not on any individual or group.
