WINDHOEK, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Liberation struggle veteran and former Minister of Trade and Industry, Ben Amathila has called on Namibians, particularly the youth, to safeguard the country’s independence by embracing unity, hard work and respect for past generations.
In an interview with Nampa on the sidelines of the 36th Independence anniversary celebrations in Windhoek on Saturday, Amathila reflected on the long and difficult road to independence, noting that many who took part in the early stages of the liberation struggle did not live to witness the freedom the country enjoys today.
“This places a responsibility on current generations to preserve the values that sustained the liberation movement,” he said.
He stressed that peace and unity remain essential for national progress and said independence must be matched with sustained effort to improve the living conditions of all citizens. According to Amathila, ensuring that no Namibian goes hungry and that children receive quality education should remain government’s priority.
Amathila also cautioned young people against disregarding the wisdom of their elders despite the advantages of modern education. He said experience gained by older generations is critical in guiding the nation forward and avoiding past mistakes.
“The temptation with young people is as they go through education, sometimes they feel they know better than their parents, their grandparents,” he said.
He encouraged young Namibians to use their education not only for personal advancement, but also to uplift their families and communities, particularly those who may not have had similar opportunities.
Amathila concluded by urging the youth to remain grounded, work collectively and contribute meaningfully to nation-building in order to secure the future of the country.
The commemoration event held in Windhoek was one of many held across the country as independence celebrations were held in all 14 regions to ensure broader inclusivity and participation for all citizens.
