South Korea's benchmark Kospi index of shares closed down over seven percent Tuesday and the Japanese Nikkei more than three percent, as investors fretted about the turmoil in the Middle East. At the close in Seoul and Tokyo, the Kospi was down 7.24 percent at 5,797.91 points and the Nikkei 225 was off 3.06 percent at 56,279.05.
