NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar softened in late trading on Tuesday. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, decreased by 0.84 percent to 96.219 at 3 p.m. (2000 GMT). In late New York trading, the euro added to 1.1979 dollars from 1.1875 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound increased to 1.3780 dollars from 1.3679 dollars in the previous session.
