1st LD: Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits southern Philippines

MANILA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- An offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck Surigao del Norte province in the southern Philippine region on Friday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. In a report, the institute said that the quake, which occurred at 7:03 a.m. local time (2303 GMT), struck at a depth of 10 km, approximately 13 km southeast of the municipality of General Luna.
