WINDHOEK, 11 OCT (NAMPA) – President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has welcomed the recent merger between MultiChoice Group and French media company, Canal Plus, as a vital step toward strengthening African storytelling and investing in local content creation.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by executives from MultiChoice Namibia and Canal Plus at State House on Thursday, the president emphasised the importance of partnerships that serve purpose-driven development.
“The African story must be told by Africans and from the African perspective, because that is the only way it can reflect the reality and strengthen the Africans on all aspects of economic and social development,” she said.
The delegation briefed President Nandi-Ndaitwah on the completion of the merger and presented a new documentary produced in her honour, titled ‘Netumbo: A Leader Beyond Politics.’ The film explores her leadership journey and lesser-known personal experiences.
“I can’t talk about myself... I have to see what people are saying about me. Then I know, maybe that’s me,” she expressed.
MultiChoice Namibia Managing Director Roger Gertze in an interview with Nampa described the documentary as a tribute to the Head of State’s legacy.
“It really talks about Her Excellency’s personal journey of leadership, the things that have not ordinarily been told in the media,” Gertze said. He confirmed the film would premiere at Ster-Kinekor and later air on DSTV’s Zambezi Magic.
Gertze also briefed Nandi-Ndaitwah on the strategic direction of the group following Canal Plus’ acquisition.
“We now have new partners on board, Canal Plus, and we came to brief Her Excellency on the transaction and what the way forward looks like,” he said.
Canal Plus representative, outlined the group’s history and commitment to Africa. With operations in 52 countries, Canal Plus, he said, produces over 4 000 hours of African content in eight languages.
“Our aim is to be rooted in local cultures and to tell African stories to the world, not only to Africans, but also to the world,” he said.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised the creative industry as a national priority and praised the merger for supporting Africa’s cultural and media growth.
