This photograph shows a mix of sand and water flowing out of a pipe at the site of a resanding operation where sand collected by a tanker from the sea bottom at the mouth of the Gironde estuary is brought through the pipe and spread on the beach, in Soulac-sur-Mer, south-western France, on April 10, 2026. An impressive network of pipes on the south beach of Soulac-sur-Mer sprayed a mixture of sand and water transported by ships from the Gironde estuary, as part of a large-scale experiment to combat coastal erosion. The stated objective is to inject some 200,000 cubic meters of sand along a one-kilometer stretch, at a time when the coastline in this area is receding by up to eight meters per year and this seaside resort is losing between 300,000 and 400,000 cubic meters of sand annually.
