The police use water cannons to disperse protesters against a two-day convention of far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to establish its new youth organisation in Giessen, western Germany, on November 29, 2025. During the convention, Germany's AfD plans to establish its new youth organisation, to draft the organisation's statutes and elect its new leadership. The AfD's former youth organisation, Junge Alternative (Young Alternative), dissolved in spring 2025 after the party separated from it. Massive counter-protests from politicians and civil society have already been announced. The city announced that it intended to cordon off the entire area around the AfD event venue due to police security concerns.
