The Croatian coastal city of Split set a new temperature record of 39.5C on Tuesday, the country's weather service confirmed to AFP, as Europe's sweltering heatwave grips the Balkans. The tourist hotspot surpassed its previous record of 38.6C set in July 1950, making it the hottest day in the city since measurements began in 1948, but it was shy of the national record of 42.8C set in 1981.
