GOBABIS, 23 MAR (NAMPA) – Eastern Chiefs FC won the first edition of the Tsumkwe Youth Cup open football tournament held at the Tsumkwe Secondary School’s sports field on Sunday.
The Tsumkwe-based outfit made history after winning the inaugural tournament which attracted 17 football teams.
En route to glory, Eastern Chiefs stunned Western Chiefs by a solitary goal in the first semifinal and booked their place in the final.
The second semifinal encounter between Young Chiefs and Mountain Tigers ended in a stalemate after each side failed to find the back of the net when the full-time whistle blew.
This led to the penalty shootouts of which Young Chiefs won 14-13 in a hard-fought kicking game to reach the final.
Eastern Chiefs were then crowned the Tsumkwe Youth Cup champions after crushing Young Chiefs 4-2.
The champions took home a trophy, N.dollars 4 000 and 20 gold medals, while Young Chiefs received N.dollars 2 000 plus 20 silver medals as runners-up.
Western Chiefs and Mountain Tigers each got N.dollars 500 cash and bronze medals for coming third in the competition.
Djimi Kasius Katjire, the head coach of Eastern Chiefs expressed excitement about his team’s victory, crediting the players for their outstanding performance.
“I am glad for this victory and my team showed class against the opponents. We prepared well for the tournament, and it was good to see three teams from Tsumkwe reaching the semifinal stage of the competition,” he said.
Katjire added that his tactics of recovering the ball from opponents contributed to their win.
“It was not an easy job; players showed their skills and my forwards were superb. We defended well and we scored crucial goals to bring this cup into our trophy cabinet,” said the coach.
Katjire also gave special credit to his two players Kahopo Elifas Mukosho and Kashera Erastus for their tremendous display on the field throughout the tournament.
“We are glad, and the team is appreciating them dearly. They are exemplary and we hope they will continue motivating others and bring more glory to our club,” said Katjire.
The competition was held under the auspices of the National Youth Council and was aimed at promoting sports and bringing the youth from across various areas in Tsumkwe and elsewhere together.
