OSHAKATI, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has highlighted significant government investment and infrastructure development in the Oshana Region, saying these projects reflect the tangible benefits of Namibia’s independence.
Speaking during the 36th Independence Day celebrations at the Oshakati Independence Stadium, Ngurare said the region has witnessed visible improvements across key sectors, including health, education, water, and economic development.
“Here in the mighty Oshana Region, you have seen with your own eyes what Independence Day means in terms of development projects undertaken in all 11 constituencies that make up the region. Rural electrification, water pipelines, rural feeder roads and health facilities have touched many lives here. Many rural households in Oshana have access to potable water. We have government institutions that have created synergies, complementing one another to meet your expectations as residents of this region,” Ngurare said.
He commended the Oshakati Town Council for the formalisation of informal settlements, noting that it demonstrated that equitable local economic empowerment is attainable.
Ngurare highlighted increased central government investment in the Oshana Region, pointing to major funding in development projects, agriculture, and healthcare services.
“The Development Bank of Namibia has financed projects worth N.dollars 978.7 million in Oshana in the last financial year. The Agricultural Bank of Namibia has financed over 43 communal farmers in Oshana, valued at over N.dollars 8.7 million. Ompundja Clinic has been upgraded to a healthcare centre at a cost of N.dollars 4 million. It now provides 24-hour services, including maternal care, and a stationed medical doctor,” he said.
Ngurare further outlined key infrastructure developments in Oshana, including investments in water supply, education facilities, and road construction.
These include seven earth dams that were dug at a cost of N.dollars 9.6 million over the same period and the rehabilitation of the Kanyemba Amutenya pipeline.
“Last year, 32 classrooms were built at various schools such as Ekuku Primary School, Joseph Mbangula Primary, Onguta Primary School, Ondangwa Secondary School, Kanyolo Primary School and many others. A gravel road between Onantsi and Ondiiyala has also been completed at a cost of over N.dollars 1.4 million,” Ngurare said.
He acknowledged ongoing development challenges such as inadequate water infrastructure for agricultural projects and limited provision of affordable housing in the region while assuring that the government is accelerating key projects and social programmes to boost economic growth and support vulnerable households.
