Nandi-Ndaitwah hosts diplomats, honours Namibia’s 36th independence

WINDHOEK, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has paid tribute to Namibia’s liberation history and called for renewed international cooperation as the country marked its 36th Independence anniversary.
Addressing members of the diplomatic corps at State House on Saturday, Nandi-Ndaitwah reflected on the historic transition to independence on 21 March 1990, reminiscing on the moment the national flag was raised at the Independence Stadium.
She reiterated the words of Founding President Sam Nujoma, who declared the country free and in control of its own destiny.
“Those words were not merely a declaration. They were a promise,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said, emphasising that independence guaranteed Namibians the right to shape their own future without colonial rule.
She further described Independence Day as a time not only for celebration, but also for reflection and renewal, noting the importance of longstanding diplomatic ties. She expressed appreciation for global messages of goodwill and singled out Nigeria’s continued friendship, welcoming former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as a guest of honour at the event.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also paid homage to countries and international movements that supported Namibia’s liberation struggle, including African nations, socialist states, and anti-apartheid activists worldwide.
“Namibia does not forget those who stood with her in times of struggle,” she added, and underscored the country’s commitment to solidarity in global affairs.
While highlighting Namibia’s achievements in peace, stability, and democratic governance over the past three decades, Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the need to expand opportunities for young people and ensure inclusive economic growth.
She outlined government priorities, including agriculture, youth empowerment, education, and housing, supported by sectors such as energy, mining, and tourism to strengthen economic resilience.
The president also reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to international cooperation through regional and global bodies, while urging deeper partnerships in trade, investment, and skills development.
“We look forward to deepening our cooperation in trade, investment, skills development, and sustainable development for the mutual benefit of our peoples,” she said.
She concluded by thanking the diplomatic community for its continued support and called for stronger people-to-people and business partnerships to advance Namibia’s development goals.
