Peru on Thursday announced tougher prison conditions for gang members as it seeks to contain a wave of violence linked to organized crime. In future, prisoners held for serious crimes such as contract killings, kidnapping and extortion will be confined to solitary cells with an hour in the yard ever day and only one monthly visit from a family member, according to a law published in the government gazette.
