NKURENKURU, 07 JUL (NAMPA) - KK United from Nkurenkuru emerged victorious in the third edition of the Nkurenkuru Mayoral Cup Tournament on Sunday, defeating Chief Sitentu 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in regular time.
The tournament, which featured 22 participating teams from across the region, started on Thursday and concluded on Sunday, with what has been described by fans as a classic derby match between two determined sides.
Chief Sitentu took an early lead, but KK United showed remarkable resilience to equalise and push the match into a penalty shootout.
Chief Sitentu coach, Paulus Hausiku, said it was a very good tournament, expressing satisfaction despite acknowledging that there are areas for improvement:
“We reached the finals among 22 teams and faced a first-division team. Despite losing on penalties, we are satisfied with the team's effort and performance,” said Hausiku.
Reflecting on successful performances, KK United’s coach, Akser Nelson Iiyambo, praised the tournament’s organisation and highlighted the team’s resilient performance.
Speaking about the derby match, Iiyambo described the game as a challenging encounter.
“It was a tough derby. Chiefs came out aggressive, scoring first, but we kept equalising. We always believed in ourselves, knowing we were the bigger team,” he said.
The coach also addressed a disciplinary issue, where KK United was issued a fine of N.dollars 1 000 for misconduct during the tournament, emphasising the team's commitment to improvement.
"Discipline is always key. We admitted our guilt, accepted we were wrong, and will take necessary measures to ensure such incidents do not repeat themselves,” he said.
