NKURENKURU, 24 MAR (NAMPA) - The Namibian Police Force’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Shelter at Nkurenkuru on Monday received a donation from the United Nations Population Fund, formerly the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).
The donation, intended for the shelter that supports victims of gender-based violence, includes a refrigerator, a microwave, a stove, a five-piece dinette set, and a set of eating and cooking utensils.
Receiving the donation, the Kavango West Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, said the donations came at the right time.
“The shelter houses victims of gender-based violence, domestic violence and vulnerable people in the region who requires needs such as food and bedding at the time of incident,” said Sakuwa-Neo.
Sakuwa-Neo commended the organisation for its positive response following a request made during a meeting held in 2024. She extended appreciation to UNFPA on behalf of the police.
“We appreciate the donor for coming to our aid, we will make sure that we put these items to good use and register them through the government procedures of treasury instructions so that it will not fall into bad hands. We will take of the items and used it for the right purposes that it was donated for,” said Sakuwa-Neo.
Sakuwa-Neo further appealed for more donors to come forward and assist with food items.
In a statement read by Regional Commander Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo on behalf of the Fund, the United Nations’ organ said that the donation aims to strengthen the GBV shelter with basic items to support survivors of gender-based violence.
“In response to the drought crisis in the country, UNFPA was implementing lifesaving interventions to mitigate gender-based violence and its consequences in drought-affected communities, such as Omaheke, two Kavango regions through the central emergency response fund,” read the statement.
