WINDHOEK, 28 FEB (NAMPA) - Former President, Hifikepunye Pohamba says the late Founding President Sam Nujoma lived to see his dream of liberating Namibia and lived a full life.
Pohamba was paying homage to Nujoma on Friday during a state memorial service at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
“He will surely be missed, but those who know him like I do should be consoled by the knowledge that he lived to ensure the independence and establishment of a free nation, free from oppression, segregation, racism and brutality. He lived to see the goals he dedicated his life to. He fought a good fight and we will continue to sustain his legacy and that of all our heroes and heroines,” Pohamba said in a heartfelt tribute.
Nujoma’s legacy, he stressed, will continue to inspire the nation at large.
“He is a man who commanded the brave sons and daughters of Namibia through the jungle, crossing many rivers in pursuit of the freedom and independence of our motherland,” Pohamba said, adding that he is honoured to pay tribute to Nujoma, an African icon.
Pohamba further maintained that Nujoma was an outstanding son of Namibia who served Namibia for decades with unparalleled distinction.
“He motivated us to not give up, but to continue the fight until Namibia was free. His unwavering courage will never be forgotten. It is part and parcel of our proud history as Namibians. I am narrating the life of an illustrious man,” he said.
Pohamba then urged the Namibian youth to embrace and internalise the ideals Nujoma loved and fought for, namely, hard work, unity of purpose, national reconciliation and rejection of tribalism ethnicity and regionalism.
Nujoma passed away on 08 February 2025 and will be laid to rest at Heroes’ Acre on Saturday.
He is survived by his wife Kovambo Nujoma, three children and 24 grandchildren.
