OPUWO, 22 MAR (NAMPA) - Leaders in the Kunene Region have called for unity, cooperation and resilience while celebrating Namibia's 36th Independence at Khorixas on Saturday.
Acting Gaos Kristofine Claasen of the #Aodaman Traditional Authority urged residents of Khorixas and the broader Kunene Region to stand together and support government efforts aimed at development and service delivery.
Claasen emphasised that unity remains key to progress, warning that division weakens communities.
"People who are united are stronger and more capable of achieving meaningful development than those who are divided," she said.
She further called on residents to work with the government, stressing that cooperation is essential in addressing challenges facing communities across the region.
Highlighting Namibia’s cultural diversity, Claasen encouraged respect among different groups and said peaceful coexistence is critical for stability and growth. She warned that conflict, if left unchecked, can escalate into chaos.
“Let us respect one another, work together and avoid unnecessary conflict,” she said.
In his welcoming remarks, Khorixas Mayor Lesley Awaseb echoed similar sentiments, emphasising unity and hope as central themes of the independence celebrations.
Awaseb said the occasion serves as a reminder of how far the country has come, while also encouraging residents to remain optimistic about the future despite ongoing challenges.
He particularly addressed the youth, urging them to remain resilient in the face of high unemployment levels and to continue striving for success.
The mayor encouraged young people to take advantage of available opportunities and to actively participate in shaping the future of their communities and the nation at large.
Awaseb noted that Independence Day is not only a time for celebration, but also a moment for reflection on progress, unity and collective responsibility.
