KATIMA MULILO, 22 MAR (NAMPA) – Zambezi Governor, Dorothy Kabula, has reminded residents of the region that independence celebrations are not only about the past, but about shaping the future.
Speaking at the regional independence commemoration event at Bukalo in the Katima Rural Constituency on Saturday, Kabula said several sons and daughters of Namibia played their part in the country’s liberation.
“Thirty-six years down the line, Namibia has made significant progress after emerging from the shadows of colonial rule to the light of freedom, which was not handed on a silver platter but won through sacrifices, courage and unwavering determination. Men and women from all walks of life stood firm, believing in the promise of a free Namibia,” she stated.
Additionally, she said Namibia has made several strides and celebrating the event at the regional level symbolises community inclusivity and togetherness.
“This day reminds us that independence is not only about the past, but about how we are shaping the future of this country together. I stand proud reflecting on the progress the country has made since its independence in 1990,” she said.
Equally, the governor said she is aware of the work that lies ahead - that of building a Namibia where opportunities are shared, where justice is held, and peace prevails.
“Let us dream bigger and bolder and save our nation with renewed dedication. Namibia’s history was already written by our heroes and heroines. Each one of us holds a pen and paper to write endless examinations of the rich history of the land of the brave. Together, we can show that the next chapter of endless examinations of the land of the brave is fulfilled with prosperity, unity, freedom and justice,” she noted.
Several former and present high-ranking regional officials, including veterans of the liberation struggle and representatives from traditional authorities, attended the event. Security commissioners and their delegations from Botswana and Zambia were also present.
