OPUWO, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Kunene Region Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua says Kunene is a region of possibilities where every resident has the potential to succeed and shape their future.
“Kunene region is indeed great, a region where a child can become what they have set out to become,” he said while speaking at the 36th Independence celebrations in Khorixas on Saturday.
The governor highlighted the region’s vast natural resources and cultural richness, noting that Kunene remains one of Namibia’s most unique and largely untapped areas.
He said its landscapes, diverse cultures and world-class tourism offerings position it as a key contributor to the national economy.
“Kunene is not just a region of promise, it is the rising star of Namibia,” Muharukua said, adding that the region continues to play a vital role in conservation through its successful community conservancies and natural heritage.
He further pointed to ongoing infrastructure development as a major driver of growth in the region. Key road projects, including the Uis-Henties Bay–Kamanjab route and the Epupa-Opuwo road, are currently under construction, while the Oute Bridge project is expected to improve access in Kunene North.
Muharukua also highlighted efforts to improve sports infrastructure, saying stadiums are being renovated and constructed across the region to support youth development.
“We must improve our sports facilities for our young people to earn a proper living from sport,” he said.
Addressing challenges, the governor acknowledged the impact of drought in the region, revealing that government is working on water infrastructure projects, including plans for a dam to support affected communities. He assured residents that their concerns are being addressed.
He called for increased investment across sectors, noting that many industries in Kunene remain underdeveloped. Muharukua urged both government and the private sector to play a role in unlocking the region’s full potential.
Muharukua concluded by reaffirming Kunene’s growth trajectory, saying its potential is steadily being unlocked through development initiatives and strong leadership.
