OPUWO, 21 MAR (NAMPA) - Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Indileni Daniel, has said Kunene has transformed from a remote area into a region of opportunities, with resilience, development, and community spirit driving its growth.
While delivering the keynote address at the 36th independence anniversary celebrations in Khorixas on Saturday, the minister stated, “Here in Kunene, we see the spirit of resilience and progress every day. Our regional leaders have shown unwavering commitment to driving development, transforming Kunene into a place where investment and growth thrive.”
She reminded citizens that independence carries both freedom and responsibility. “Independence gave us freedom, yes, but it also gave us a duty to protect what is ours, to grow what we have, and to leave Namibia stronger than we found it,” Daniel said, urging communities to invest in youth, infrastructure, and local enterprises.
The minister highlighted tangible achievements, including the refurbishment of the Herbert Conradie Stadium and the expansion of sports facilities in Kamanjab and Okangwati.
These initiatives, she said, provide youth with spaces to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
Daniel also praised Kunene’s global contribution through tourism.
“Tourism here is not only about beauty, it is about livelihood, dignity, and sustainability. From Epupa Falls to the Skeleton Coast and our world-renowned conservancies, these initiatives empower communities while preserving our environment,” the minister said.
She further emphasised the ministry’s support for ecotourism, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, sustainable forestry, and craft enterprises.
“Environmental stewardship is not separate from development; it is the backbone of sustainable growth,” Daniel said.
She highlighted projects that create income and employment while safeguarding biodiversity.
The minister pointed out Kunene’s strategic location near Angola, calling it a gateway for trade, investment, and regional integration. Leveraging these opportunities, she said, will strengthen both Kunene and Namibia’s long-term prosperity.
Daniel concluded with a call for unity and service and urged citizens to honour the sacrifices of national heroes.
