OSHAKATI, 21 MAR (NAMPA) – Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge on Saturday said Namibia’s independence remains a cornerstone of national identity, symbolising the hard-won freedom, peace and stability that citizens continue to enjoy 36 years after liberation.
Delivering his welcoming remarks at the Independence Stadium in Oshakati during the country’s 36th independence anniversary celebrations, Iipinge described the occasion as both a celebration and a moment of deep reflection on the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s freedom.
“It is with great honour and immense pride that I stand before you as we gather to commemorate this historic occasion,” Iipinge said, welcoming members of the public, and dignitaries, including Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, who was the guest of honour.
Iipinge paid tribute to Namibia’s heroes and heroines, noting that their courage and unwavering commitment laid the foundation of the nation.
“We remember those who paid the ultimate price so that we can enjoy the peace and stability we have today. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” the governor said.
Iipinge further highlighted that this year’s decentralised celebrations, as directed by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, reflect a deliberate effort to bring the spirit of independence closer to the people across all regions.
According to the governor, independence should not be viewed as a past event, but as an ongoing journey requiring collective responsibility.
“As a region, we remain committed to development, improved service delivery and the empowerment of our people, particularly the youth, women and vulnerable groups,” he added.
Iipinge concluded by thanking the Oshana residents who gathered in large numbers for the regional independence anniversary celebration, saying their presence demonstrated unity, patriotism and shared national pride.
