OTJIWARONGO, 20 MAR (NAMPA) – Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Professor Peter Katjavivi, is set to deliver the keynote address at the Otjozondjupa regional Independence Day celebrations scheduled for Saturday at the Mokati Sports Stadium in Otjiwarongo.
This was announced by Otjozondjupa Governor, John //Khamuseb, on Thursday. The event will take place at the Mokati Sports Stadium.
//Khamuseb, in an interview with Nampa, described Katjavivi as a son of the soil who was born in the village of Ovitoto in the Omatako Constituency of Otjozondjupa.
“The former Speaker of the National Assembly is a true liberation struggle icon and one of the heroes born in this region, so he is the perfect choice to address us on this historic day,” he said.
The governor further called on the inhabitants of the region to join the nation in celebrating Independence Day, and to do so in a peaceful manner.
//Khamuseb warned that no weapons, including firearms, knives, sticks, or pangas, will be permitted inside the venue. Members of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) will be deployed to maintain law and order throughout the event.
The governor also reminded the public that the sale of liquor is strictly prohibited at the stadium, emphasising that as 21 March is a national public holiday, the sale of alcohol is not allowed.
Organisers expect a turnout of more than 2 000 people from the seven constituencies of Tsumkwe, Grootfontein, Otavi, Otjiwarongo, Okakarara, Omatako, and Okahandja. To facilitate attendance, the fovernor confirmed that transport to and from Otjiwarongo will be provided, along with meals for members of the public.
A street procession comprising members of the Namibian Defence Force and NamPol will lead the activities of the day from the Etambi location to the stadium on Saturday morning.
The day’s programme features a diverse lineup of liberation struggle narratives, traditional performances, poetry, and music, concluding with a high-profile football match between Life Fighters and Mighty Gunners, the governor said.
