Makybe Diva, the only horse in history to win three consecutive Melbourne Cups, died Saturday after a sudden bout of colic, with the champion mare hailed as transcending the sport. She died in retirement in Australia aged 27 from a gastrointestinal issue, long-time owner Tony Santic said.
