Brussels gives green light for German state aid for coal phase-out

Brussels (dpa) - The European Commission on Tuesday allowed the German government to pay compensation of up to ?1.75 billion ($2 billion) to cushion the impact of the coal phase-out in the east of the country. Germany is to gradually phase out the use of all coal by 2038. The state aid is to compensate mining operator Leag for the closure of its lignite-fired power plants in the Lusatia region.
