Rare earth prices jump after China tightens export controls

Munich (dpa) - Prices for rare earth metals surged in May after China imposed tighter export restrictions, according to a monthly commodity index published by the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw). Overall, prices for rare earths - a group of metals essential to high-tech manufacturing in the electronics, automotive, and defence industries - rose by 8% in dollar terms.
