Police on German holiday island beach shoot out-of-control dog

Hamburg (dpa) - A dog had to be destroyed on a beach on the North Sea island of Sylt after it bit off part the thumb of one of its owners, police in the popular German holiday resort reported on Thursday. The incident occurred on Rantum Beach on the island's western coast on Sunday afternoon when its owners, a German couple on holiday, attempted to protect themselves from their own dog, a Bernese Mountain Dog.
