Opuwo records another cholera case

WINDHOEK, 24 JUN (NAMPA) - The Ministry of Health and Social Services on Tuesday confirmed another cholera case in Opuwo.
A statement released by the ministry’s spokesperson, Walters Kamaya, said the latest case involves a 13-year-old boy with no history of contact with the previously confirmed cases.
The boy, he said, presented with acute watery diarrhoea and severe abdominal pain but is reported to be in a stable condition.
“The case, who was admitted on 20 June 2025, was discharged yesterday (22 June 2025), in good condition. The team called the head of the household this morning to check on them and they are all doing well,” Kamaya said.
Health minister, Esperance Luvindao, last week declared a cholera outbreak in Opuwo, with a total of eight cases and one fatality.
“With the financial support of WHO, we deployed a team of three SURGE staff yesterday to support the outbreak response activities, two staff responsible for Risk Communication and Community Engagement and one responsible for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene” Kamaya said.
The team, he added, was joined by an epidemiologist and a senior advisor for public health systems and security from the United States’ Centre for Disease Control’s Country Office.
