OPUWO, 14 APR (NAMPA) – Epupa Zebra Stars staged an incredible comeback that left the crowd at Opuwo’s Newman Katuta Stadium in a state of disbelief on Sunday, defeating Kunene Football League favourites, Okarindi Komutati, 2-1.
This victory remarkably bolstered their hopes of securing safety in the league, setting themselves up with an eight-point advantage away from the relegation zone while equally seeking a top four berth.
Okarindi drew the first blood during their encounter with their arch-rivals before Epupa responded with two solid goals to move to the middle of the table on 14 points.
Epupa coach Uatjiruapi Tjingorori said despite their massive victory over the relentless Okarindi Komutati, they remain focused on the task at hand, which is “challenging for the title”.
“We still have a lot of games to play, the title race is still open and we are focussed on that,” he said, adding that there has been a remarkable improvement in the team’s playing style as compared to the start of the season.
Tjingorori further stated: “We managed to rectify our past mistakes; we have now managed to gather enough talents to challenge for the title.”
Epupa Zebra Stars are now seated in position seven, with eight points clear from relegation worries, and Okarindi Komutati reduced to the fourth position with 22 points, five points below the leading team, Robber Chanties.
The Khorixas-based outfit, Robber Chanties, a force to be reckoned in the league with are en route to rewrite history and defend the title they won last season, following their impressive 2-1 victory over Young Eagles (11) before triumphing over Grootberg United (9) 3-1. They are seated at the top of the standing with 27 points.
The title race is still open, with Khaibasen looking over their shoulder in second place with 26 points. Khaibasen demolished Young Eagles on Sunday in a 6-3 goal thriller. Kunene NamPol are back in the race in third position with 24 points following a hard fought 3-1 victory over relegation threatened Golden Wolves. Green Dangers (5) also recorded a 4-2 win over Etosha United (8), with !Ugab FC (6) beating Sixty Eleven (10) 2-1.
