WINDHOEK, 14 APR (NAMPA) – Khomas Governor, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, on Sunday visited the family of two children who died in a shack fire at the One Nation informal settlement in Windhoek.
It is reported that their shack caught fire around 22h00 on Saturday while they were sleeping. The victims’ mother was reportedly at work and their older brother, aged 20, was at the neighbour’s house at the time.
The death of the children, a six-year-old boy and a girl aged four, has deeply shaken the nation, Nujoma told family members.
“No parent should have to bury their child, especially under such devastating circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this painful moment. We are here today, not just to mourn, but also to stand in solidarity with this community. Your pain is our pain. Your loss is our loss,” Nujoma said.
He also said the Khomas Regional Council will be supporting the family during the mourning period.
The incident, he added, highlights the urgent and continuing challenges of housing, safety, and infrastructure that many people face.
“It is not acceptable that in 2025, families still live in structures that offer little to no protection from fire, the cold, or other dangers. We recognise the deep scars that this tragedy has left on the entire One Nation settlement, and we are here to say, you are not alone,” Nujoma stressed.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare also visited the family on Sunday to show solidarity and support.
He expressed condolences, and asked the family to remain together during this time of grief.
The Premier said the government, through its various disaster stakeholders, will offer the necessary assistance to the family in due course.
