NKURENKURU, 06 APR (NAMPA)- The Namibian Police (NamPol) in the Kavango West Region have reported two car incidents that occurred at different villages on Saturday due to slippery roads caused by rainwater.
Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga confirmed the incidents to Nampa on Sunday, saying that the first occurred around 08h00 on the Harapembe village gravel road in the Bunya Constituency of the Kavango West Region.
“It is alleged that a licensed driver of a Toyota pick-up, registration number GRN 81499, belonging to the Kavango West Regional Council, Tondoro Constituency, was travelling from the south towards the north on the gravel road, lost control, and the vehicle overturned, causing injuries to the driver and damage to the vehicle,” he said.
Muronga added that the driver was identified was rushed to the Rundu State Hospital for medical attention.
The second incident occurred between 14h00 and 15h00 on a new gravel road at Gcaru village, approximately 10 kilometres from the T-junction towards Gcwatjinga village in the Kavango West Region.
“It is alleged that the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser pick-up was driving from Rundu to Ncuse village, and upon reaching Gcaru village, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which tipped onto its right side, causing minor damage and a broken window. There were no visible injuries to the driver,” he said.
Muronga further explained that the vehicle was carrying 12 occupants, including the driver, and the youngest passengers were two one-year-olds. No injuries were recorded, although some passengers complained of pain and were taken to Rundu State Hospital by officials from the MVA Fund.
Muronga cautioned all drivers to reduce their speed and adjust their driving to match the road conditions, as many roads are in poor condition due to rainwater. He warned that high speeds affect stopping distances on slippery surfaces.
Police investigations in both incidents continue.
