NKURENKURU, 29 JAN (NAMPA) - A 32-year-old police officer stationed at the Ncaute police station in the Kavango West Region was arrested on Tuesday for the alleged rape of a female inmate at the police holding cells.
Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga told Nampa the officer allegedly raped the inmate on two separate occasions on 22 and 23 January in the Ncaute police station holding cells.
“The suspect while on duty allegedly forced himself onto the 22-year-old female inmate,” Muronga said.
The suspect remains in police custody at the holding facility, while investigations into the case continue under the provisions of the Combating of Rape Act, Act 8 of 2000. The suspect is set to appear before the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The police reported another rape involving a 27-year-old woman at Mupini village in the Kapako Constituency on Sunday.
According to Muronga, the incident occurred around 23h00 while the woman was on her way home from nearby cucashops.
It is alleged that the suspect grabbed the woman’s arm and pushed her to the ground before raping her. He then reportedly punched her all over her body.
The woman visited the Mupini health facility on Monday and was transferred to the Rundu State Hospital for further treatment.
Muronga said the suspect is a resident of Mupini village but has not yet been arrested.
Police investigations continue.
