NKURENKURU, 16 JAN (NAMPA) – A 28-year-old woman died after the hut she was sleeping in was struck by lightning and caught fire in the Kavango West Region on Wednesday.
According to Deputy Commissioner Johannes Kudumo of the Namibian Police Force, the incident occurred around 04h00 at Nkonke village.
The deceased has been identified as Haita Johanna Nzawo.
She was reportedly asleep in the hut along with three other people when it was struck by lightning.
Nzawo was burnt beyond recognition, while one of the other occupants suffered burns on her back.
Kudumo said the deceased’s next of kin are informed. Her remains were taken to the Nkurenkuru police mortuary.
The police also reported that a 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to kill his 11-month-old son.
Kudumo said the incident occurred around 20h00 on Sunday at Sikondo village.
It is alleged that the suspect gave the baby a concoction of Betadine solution and Gentian Violet solution to drink with the intent of killing him.
The suspect was arrested Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
