WINDHOEK, 13 JAN (NAMPA)- The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)'s Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo, said a total of 18 police officers will be deployed to the Guinas Constituency in the Oshikoto region for the by-election scheduled for Friday.

Shikongo was speaking at a press briefing on Monday, when he said that the force is collaborating with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to ensure a safe and peaceful environment during the by-election. The constituency will have 20 polling stations and 15 mobile stations. The election follows the death of Councilor Elias Marthinu in October 2024.

Swapo and the Landless People’s Movement are the only parties contesting the election.

Shikongo also said that routine patrols will be intensified and teams will be on standby for any
eventualities.

He further noted that the transportation of election material will be done under police escort and stored at Tsumeb Police Station for safeguarding, before, during and after the entire election process.

“The deployed officers are well aware of the police functions, and are inducted and prepared to handle any challenges that may be encountered. Members of the public are strongly encouraged to refrain from carrying firearms and dangerous weapons, and are further urged to exercise patience and cooperate with election officials and security personnel at all times. Members of the public are further urged to refrain from going to the polling stations while under the influence of alcohol,” Shikongo said.

Additionally, Shikongo warned against acts of violence, intimidation, or threats to public safety, referencing recent social media posts made by locals and some in the diaspora regarding the recent National Assembly and presidential elections.
