Saxony-Anhalt premier admits 'defeat' for Merz's CDU as AfD surges

Magdeburg, Germany (dpa) - The conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) have suffered "defeat" in the election in Saxony-Anhalt, the eastern state's Premier Sven Schulze said on Sunday, as projections showed his party far behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).  Projections showed the CDU - the party of Chancellor Friedrich Merz - on 18.5%, down from 37.1% in the last state election in 2021.  The AfD, meanwhile, was on 44%, leaving the......
