Italy's northeastern Veneto region, which encompasses Venice, declared a state of emergency Thursday due to drought, with more than a quarter less rainfall from January to May compared with 2025. Citing "abnormal hydrological and hydraulic conditions", Veneto President Alberto Stefani called on local authorities to adopt "more sparing and sustainable use of water resources", according to a statement published on the region's website.
