EU ambassador underscores education cooperation at SHINE launch

WINDHOEK, 26 MAR (NAMPA) – European Union Ambassador to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins has emphasised the importance of education and research in driving sustainable development and strengthening international cooperation.
Martins made the remarks at the launch of the Sustainable Strategies in Higher Education Internationalisation Towards Excellence in Namibia (SHINE) Project at the University of Namibia on Wednesday.
The SHINE Project is funded through the Erasmus+ Programme and aims to enhance collaboration between higher education institutions in Namibia and Europe.
The event was amongst others attended by Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, and UNAM Vice Chancellor Kenneth Matengu.
“It is a great pleasure to join you today for the launch of the SHINE Project. Your collaboration reflects the very spirit of Erasmus+: building bridges between institutions, countries, and people through education and knowledge,” said Martins.
She said education and research empower individuals and institutions while enabling societies to respond to global challenges, adding that Namibia remains a valued partner of the European Union with cooperation grounded in shared values and mutual respect.
“Our relationship is built on shared values, mutual respect, and a common commitment to sustainable development and opportunity for future generations,” she said.
Martins noted that the SHINE Project will strengthen academic collaboration, support skills development and contribute to the long-term growth of Namibia’s higher education sector.
“Erasmus+ is more than a programme; it is a platform for opportunity,” she said.
Initiatives such as SHINE and other EU-supported programmes are key to building research capacity, fostering innovation and preparing young people to participate in global scientific and development efforts, she added.
Martins reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s education, research and innovation sectors through continued partnerships.
