Niger's main prison in its capital Niamey was built to house 400 inmates but hosts nearly 1,900, prison authorities said Monday, as prisoners blamed a judicial backlog for their woes. The jail in central Niamey was built in 1947 by French colonial authorities. It currently holds 1,895 inmates: "399 convicted prisoners and 1,496 on remand, corresponding to an occupancy rate of 416 percent", its warden, Commander Abdourahamane Foutah, said during a......
